The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
